In their only varsity game last week, the Grand County High School Lady Devil softball team defeated Emery 15-3 at Castle Dale on Thursday, March 30.

The Lady Devils opened up a 7-0 lead in the top of the first inning and were never threatened as they cruised to their second region win.

“We just came out and pounded the ball,” said GCHS head coach Brook Shumway. “All of our girls hit the ball well.”

Junior Tyra Robertson belted a home run and a double for the Lady Devils, who recorded a total of 23 hits during the game. Hannah Owen hit two triples, and three other players each had two doubles for Grand, namely Raegan Paxman, Akyra McNeely, and Toni McElhaney.

Starting pitcher Tia Shumway went the distance, allowing just three hits as she picked up the win on the mound.

The following afternoon, Friday, March 31, the Lady Devils split a junior varsity doubleheader at home against the Carbon Lady Dinos, losing the first game but winning the second.

This week, the Lady Devils are scheduled to play Richfield in a non-region game at Moab on Thursday, April 6 at 3:30 p.m. The following day, Grand will travel to Salina to take on the region-leading North Sevier Lady Wolves in a varsity doubleheader, with game times scheduled for 2 and 4 p.m.
