At the state 1A/2A boys tennis tournament held Saturday, May 13 at Salt Lake City’s Liberty Park, the Grand County High School Red Devils lost both of their opening-round quarterfinal matches, with sophomore Kai Wainer losing to Rowland Hall freshman Peter Chase, the 2A North’s No. 2 seed. Chase won the match, 6-3, 6-1.
In the No. 2 doubles bracket at state, GCHS junior Elton Kunze-Jones and sophomore Braxten Pierce lost to Rowland Hall’s Matthew O’Brien and Kenzo Okazaki. Grand’s duo won the first set 6-3, but lost the next two, 4-6, 1-6. Rowland Hall ended up placing second at state as a team, with Waterford taking first.
