The course, which is designed to help aging drivers maintain safe driving skills, will cover a variety of topics, including aging drivers and the changes that take place as people age, such as vision, hearing, reaction time and agility, changes in the vehicles people drive and the numerous features and devices designed to improve safety while driving, changes in roads and highways and the numerous modifications that have been made to roadways, as well as information about new traffic laws that have been passed in recent years.
In addition, participants will learn how to minimize the effects of dangerous blind spots, how to maintain a proper following distance, the safest ways to change lanes and make turns at busy intersections. Also the effects of medications, the importance of eliminating distractions, such as eating, smoking, and cell phones will be discussed.
Course discussion will also include recent changes in traffic laws.
No written tests or behind-the-wheel tests will be given during the course. Participants enrolled in the class will receive a certificate upon completion of the course, which they can provide to their automobile insurance agent in order to receive a discount on automobile insurance premiums.
The cost of the course is $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members.
