And while community journalism might be the last refuge of unbiased journalism, I don’t necessarily ascribe to such sentimentalism here at The Times-Independent when it comes to rooting for Big Red.
It’s because of this love of city and team that I frequently find myself at odds with the sports opinion gods at The Salt Lake Tribune and The Deseret News when it comes to the rankings they publish each week.
In short, Grand County (6-0, 2-0 in Region 2A South) is getting less respect than it deservedly commands at this point in the season, I believe.
Case in point: The Deseret News has us ranked No. 4 in their Week 6 recap. Coming in at No. 2, however, are the 5-1 (2-0) Beavers — a team that has only logged 194 points on offense and given up 82 points, compared to the Red Devils’ 244-43 statistical points difference across six games.
And guess which team The Deseret News ranks at No. 3. If you guessed they picked another 5-1 (2-0) team, you’d be right — yep, the Delta Rabbits.
It makes me want to give up carrots in my diet.
If anything, if I were pulling the strings behind the editorial curtain at 30 East 100 South in Salt Lake City, I would be generous and rank the Red Devils no lower than No. 2, behind the South Summit Wildcats in the top spot since the Beavers and Rabbits have already shown they can’t match up on key stats with us and they have already lost games to the Wildcats, 30-7, and the Beavers, 34-21, respectively.
There is absolutely no reason for the Beavers to be ranked ahead of us — though I could be totally wrong and that will suss out on Friday, Oct. 6 when we visit our friends from the other side at their house. If the Rabbits can beat South Summit at home this week as well, I’ll be equally humbled.
If I’m wrong, I’ll admit it. But I have faith in our undefeated Grand County Red Devils. Go Big Red.
