The Moab Valley Multicultural Center (MVMC) courtyard will soon overflow with hundreds of paper flowers, candles and several other types of traditional folk art inspired by departed loved ones at the 7th annual Day of the Dead Festival, set for Sunday, Oct. 29 from 1 to 5 p.m.

Everyone is welcome to the annual festival, which celebrates the circle of life. The 2016 festival saw a record number of guests participating in the holiday and, according to MVMC Volunteer Coordinator Katlyn Keane, the center is looking forward to even more people joining them this year.

“Day of the Dead, or, Día de los Muertos, is a holiday that celebrates and honors loved ones who have passed away,” Keane said. “Colorful altars and makeshift tombs are decorated with photos, flowers, candles and offerings of whatever that person enjoyed most during their life. Many cultures believe that the spirits of their lost loved ones return and join them in the land of the living during this holiday, so a party is prepared especially for them. Day of the Dead has its origins in Mexico, but is widely celebrated throughout Central and South America as well as many parts of the United States. Similar versions of the holiday are also celebrated worldwide.”

During the festival there will be home-made Mexican food for purchase, cultural displays, free children’s activities, face painting, a photo booth, local folk art, a graffiti art demonstration and a live Mariachi band.

Admission is free with food and desserts available for purchase. Anyone who wants to learn more, schedule a cultural presentation or volunteer can contact MVMC at 435-259-5444 or
