The Lady Devils varsity basketball team earned their first road victory of the season, toppling Gunnison, 38-27, on Saturday, Dec. 2.
“The defensive effort was outstanding,” said head coach Randy Martin. “To hold them to only 27 points was incredible.”
The Lady Devils had an immensely effective offensive strategy as well.
Trailing 18-17 at the half, the Devils needed to switch their game plan. Martin said he noticed that Gunnison was double-teaming his two biggest scorers, Veda Gritts and Hannah Owen, every time they took possession. With a quick adjustment, the Lady Devils were able to draw the defense towards either Gritts or Owen, which freed the other up for a play on the basket.
“Whoever had the ball would immediately get doubled, so whoever had possession would pivot towards the basket, freeing the other for the pass,” Martin said. “Through teamwork, we were able to draw Gunnison towards the ball and create holes in the defense, and then capitalize on those mistakes.”
Gritts racked up a whopping 14 points, 14 rebounds and four assists. Hannah Owen put up 18 points, seven rebounds and four assists. With the win, the Lady Devils are undefeated with a record of 2-0.
Next up for the squad is a Dec. 12 home game against Pinnacle Academy.
