No matter the number of gyms around, it’s no easy task to embark on a search for the right place to get in shape or practice a certain sport. In Moab the gym options are limited, but there is a wealth of fitness coaching with dozens of multi-disciplinary classes offered around town.
The biggest gym in Moab is South Town, which is open 24 hours a day, making it convenient for those who have schedules that complicate committing to certain hours of the week. Its open gym setting is geared for those who have some experience with weights and workout routines, given that most individuals plug in their headphones and work out alone.
For those who are looking to interact with coaches, there are classes offered in spin/core, high intensity interval training, yoga, tai chi, kung fu and boxing. The martial arts classes vary during different times of the year, but the gym’s padded room, boxing bags, and the large basket of fight gear is a resource for those looking to get a little more personal with the their workouts.
Another fitness venture in Moab recently celebrated its first year of coaching the local community. The Gym on 5th, located on 500 West, offers 24 group classes each week at different hours of the day, ranging from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.
“The workouts are a series of high intensity interval training exercises, weight-lifting, core strengthening, a little bit of gymnastics, and cardio,” said Emily Klarer, trainer and co-owner, “I enjoy watching people get out of their comfort zones and realize how strong they really are.”
The Gym on 5th is owned and coached by five associates — and each of them adds their own variations to the cross-training routines. Each coach leads a day during the week, teaching an average of five classes.
“The maximum class size is 10, since we like to keep it small enough to have one-on-one interactions,” said Casey Montandon, a trainer and gym co-owner, as he demonstrated the proper way to dead lift.
Given the licensing costs that are affiliated with the brand CrossFit, the Gym on 5th decided not to feature the discipline — and have consequently created their own unique mix of workouts and playlists.
For those seeking an Eastern flavor to their workout there is the Moab Yoga Studio, located on East Center Street. The studio rotates ten coaches every week, and at times invites guest practitioners to share the style they’ve developed.
“Trying out different teachers seems to be the best way to find a good fit,” said Star Klin, a teacher at the studio. “I’m pretty good at meeting someone and getting a feel for their personality and directing them to the right class.”
The studio provides mats for students who are dropping in unannounced for classes and there’s no required dress code. Gentle yoga and yoga basics are the classes recommended for beginners considering the benefits of the discipline. For those with yoga fluency — especially those that want to further develop their pranayama, or breathing techniques — there are many longer classes with core poses and rhythmic breathing studies.
For fans of high-intensity workouts, CrossFit Moab provides a professional gym setup for fans of the discipline. Owner Clint Curtis opened in 2015 after attending a CrossFit Level 1 seminar in Park City, which certified him to open his own gym. The gym’s membership counts about 60 locals who enjoy the benefits of the varying high-intensity interval workouts with the three coaches on staff.
The Moab Recreation Center is most commonly known for its aquatics facility. It’s a recreation center with a six-lane competition pool and is equipped with 1- and 3-meter diving boards. During the summer there’s an outdoor, three-lane lap pool with a steady current and a bubble pool, a dream come true for many children. The facility also provides a 2,400 square-foot free-weight and cardio machine fitness center. It also provides swimming lessons for individuals as young as pre-school.
