A solo home run by Grand County senior Tyra Robertson proved to be the game winner against Juab last week in the first round of the UHSAA quad playoffs. The Lady Devils bested the Lady Wasps, 9-7, playing in Nephi. Adding to Robertson’s big swing, Hannah Owen followed her in the rotation and smashed another one over the fence for the ninth and final run of the game.

Jaci Shumway also slapped a fourth-inning homer in the 3A post-season battle.

After a back-and-forth of hits and runs on both sides, the game was tied 7-7 in the fourth inning. A sacrifice bunt and sacrifice fly by Kaci McKinney added two RBI, and Toni McElhaney also scored on a sacrifice bunt and scored again after reaching on error. Owen, Robertson and Shumway logged RBIs as well.

On defense, Hannah Tangren led the team at shortstop with five outs on five chances, while Hannah Owen earned a stop with two assists to her fielders. Robertson also logged a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage with four stops and an assist.

Shumway pitched a full seven innings, penciling in a 5.00 ERA, allowing seven runs on nines hits, though she earned five errors and walked six Lady Wasps.

The Lady Devils (11-16, No. 6 seed) will face the Manti Lady Templars (15-10-1, No. 2 seed) on Thursday, May 10 at Spanish Fork. A win over Manti would propel Grand County to face the winner of the Grantsville-South Sevier matchup on Friday, May 11.
