Recreational club swim team practice began Monday, June 4 at the Moab Recreation and Aquatic Center, and registration remains open. The program offers opportunities for kids ages eight years old and up to work on swimming techniques and skills.
“The purpose of swim club is to help kids gain confidence, stroke skills, have fun in a non-competitive environment, and prepare them to swim on the high school swim team,” Wendy Young, head coach, said. The program consists of three different levels that offer coaching for a variety of skill levels and age groups. “We will try to have one intra-squad meet this summer,” Young added, explaining that meets are difficult to coordinate because so many families travel throughout the summer months, something the program accommodates. The swim team will offer three practices per week, on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday mornings from 8 a.m. to 9:15 a.m.
Those interested in participating can register at the MRAC. “If you are new to the program come during practice time for an assessment,” Young said to potential members. To pass the assessment, swimmers are required to be able to swim 25 yards of freestyle and 25 yards of backstroke.
Swimmers and coaches are looking forward to a fun season. “It looks like we’ll have a big club this summer,” Young added. “I think around 40!”
