Some take issue with Pride flag at MARC

The 2018 Moab Pride Festival by most accounts was well received, but a couple of residents called City Hall to complain about the American flag outside the Moab Recreation Center being lowered and replaced with the rainbow-themed Pride flag, according to City Manager David Everitt. The Times-Independent also heard from a couple of concerned citizens.

Some city employees tasked with lowering and raising the flag questioned the practice. While Everitt said he was precluded from discussing personnel matters, he acknowledged “a good internal discussion” was held to let employees know what remedies are available when they are uncomfortable performing certain tasks.

Everitt said last year people complained when the Pride flag was put on the same pole as the American Flag, so this year the city chose to fly only the Pride flag in an effort to avoid controversy. Everitt said the city would fly the Mexican flag during a Cinco de Mayo celebration at the MARC, or any flag for that matter, if organizers make a request.

“The Pride organization is the only one that’s asked,” said Everitt, who predicted the Moab City Council in the near future might need to look at a policy to guide future events.
