The Red Devil cross-country team competed in two meets last week. On Wednesday, Sept. 26, the runners traveled to Blanding for the John Thorton Invitational where both the boys and girls team placed second. The following Friday, the team ran in the very competitive Park City Invitational.

Running against region opponents in Blanding, the girls team continued its strong season. Kylah Ricks took first place with a time of 21:40. Anika Scherer ran a 22:36 to take second. Jessie Anderson finished in seventh by running a 24:18. Bella Welch came in tenth with a time of 24:56. Mercedes Zunich rounded out Grand’s scorers with a 15th-place finish and a time of 25:47. Meanwhile, Lorena Johnson ran well in the junior varsity race, taking eighth place with a time of 31:52.

In the boys varsity race, Arthur Hawks led the team with a time of 20:02 to take 12th. Malachi Ricks finished 10 seconds later in 15th place. Soren Indergard ran a time of 20:42 to take 19th place. Evan Ellison was one second behind in 20th place. Jameson Hawks was the last scorer for Grand in 21st place with a time of 20:50. Daniel Thayer and Patrick Johnson ran in the JV race, taking 10th and 11th place respectively with times only one second apart.

Following the successful showing in Blanding, the team headed to Park City to race against some of the state’s best runners.

The competition was stiff, but Kylah Ricks still earned a bronze medal by running a time of 18:47 in the girls varsity race that had 120 runners. Jessie Anderson and Sadie Farnsworth also competed in varsity, both posting season best times of 21:08 and 23:00 respectively. Welch and Johnson ran in the JV race, where Welch finished in 28th out of 240 runners.

For the boys team, Ellison was the top finisher. He took 12th place out of 168 runners with a time of 16:26. Malachi Ricks ran a 16:30, his best time of the season, to finish 16th. Arthur Hawks ran a 17:12 to take 47th place, making him the third fastest freshman in the varsity race.

Grand’s next race, Tuesday Oct. 9, will be the Region 15 championship held at the Moab Golf Club at 4 p.m. That meet will determine who qualifies for the state championship in Sugar House Park the following week.
