The Grand County High School boys basketball team will head into 2019 and region play with an undefeated 9-0 record. Before taking a break for the holidays, the Red Devils had a very busy week. The squad picked up wins over Monticello, Wayne, Monument Valley and Summit Academy.

Dec. 19:

Grand 67, Wayne 48

The night after beating the Buckaroos, Grand travelled to Wayne and easily handled the Badgers. The Red Devils got out to an early lead, carrying a 13-point advantage into halftime. Grand then scored 23 in the final frame to come away with the big win. Senior Kevin Park led Grand with 16 points, with a dozen of those points coming off shots from deep.

Dec. 20:

Grand 77, Monument Valley 47

Grand got out to a 10-point lead in the first quarter and didn’t look back. Pouring on 29 points to win the third quarter by more than 20 sealed the victory. A lot of Red Devils got minutes in the blowout win, with 13 players scoring during the game. Junior Luke Williams led the way with 15 points.

Dec. 22:

Grand 62, Summit Academy 46

The Red Devils finished the 2018 leg of the season by traveling to Salt Lake City to take on the Summit Academy Bears in the arena where the Utah Jazz play. Grand won in style, getting up by 13 at the half and then coasting to a win. A good portion of Grand’s points came from the team’s big men, with seniors Connor Guerrero and Cameron Hoppensteadt scoring 14 and 12, respectively. Hoppensteadt earned a double-double by grabbing 13 rebounds.

Up Next

Things will likely get tougher for Grand in 2019 when region play gets underway. The Red Devils will kick off the New Year with back-to-back home games against Manti and North Sanpete on Jan. 4 and 5. For the Friday matchup with the Templars, the varsity showdown is scheduled for 7 p.m. Then on Saturday, the varsity squad will play the Hawks at 4 p.m.
