Donald Dale Covey passed away on Saturday July 5, 2008 at his home.
“Big Don” as he was known to many, was a longtime Moab resident, and a true local. Don was born in Grand Rapids, Mich., on June 20, 1933, to Sylvia and Earl Covey. Don moved to Moab in 1967, where he worked as a Jack-of-all–trades. He met and married Nancy Ellis in 1967. They had three children in addition to Nancy’s three boys, who Don called his own.
Don spent many days roaming the backcountry surrounding Moab. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Don was always full of jokes, stories, love and laughter!
Anyone who knew him, knew that he had a one-of-a-kind, sense of humor that would have you in stitches before too long.
Don is survived by his son Don; two daughters, Tina (Lacy) and Candy (Tim) Covey; his other children, Lee, Mike (Terri), and Tim Beeson; grandchildren, Shaunee, Chistopher, Stephanie, Michael, Shayla, Cheryl, Charlena, Tineka (Derrick), Tazz, Alisha, Stevie, Teona, Sasha, and Kristin; 13 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by numerous friends, including ex-wife and long-time friend, Nancy (Lloyd) Thayn, who were just as close as family.
Don was preceded in death by his parents and his only sister, Pat Ross, brother-in-law Bill Ross, and nephew Kay Ross.
At Don’s request cremation has taken place and a private memorial for the family and close friends will be held. There will also be a wake held in honor of Don’s life on Sunday July 13, 2008 at the Old City Park starting at noon. All who had the pleasure of knowing “Big Don” are asked to join the family in celebrating a life well lived. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.SpanishValleyMortuary.com.
In lieu of flowers Don’s family has asked for donation to help pay for funeral expenses.
