Richard Harold McCandless passed away on Oct. 5, 2008 in Grand Junction, Colo., at St. Mary’s Hospital from complications of an age-related fall.
Richard was born on March 6, 1921 in Burlington, Iowa, the son of Isaac McCandless and Beulah Baker McCandless.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corp during World War II in the South Pacific and was a decorated war hero, receiving the Silver Star and the Purple Heart with a Battlefield Citation. He moved to Moab in 1954 and owned King Electric and Sunshine Laundry, which was located in the Miller Shopping Center. Due to age and poor health, Richard has spent the last two years at different nursing homes in Colorado.
His parents, his son, David, sisters, Emogene, Geraldine, and brother, Herb, precede him in death. He is survived by his brother, Fred McCandless of Houston Tex., sons, Steven (Charme) of Moab, Donald of Moab, and daughter, Pamela of Phoenix, Ariz.; grandchildren, Ryan, Donnie, Luke, and Landon McCandless, great-granddaughter, Kimber McCandless, stepsons, Kelly Sheets, Justin Darbonne, and a very special stepdaughter, Anna Darbonne.
At Richard’s request, cremation has taken place and no services will be held.
