Dwain Lyle Stefan, 1942 ~ 2008

Dwain Lyle Stefan, our dad, grandpa, brother, and friend left us to rope, ride, brand, and gather cows in heaven on Dec. 7, 2008. He was 66 years of age.

A funeral service honoring Dwain’s life will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, Dec. 12, at the Delta Taylor Funeral Service Chapel, with Rev. Roy Trueblood presiding. Services concluded at the church.

Dwain Lyle Stefan was born to Pete Stefan and Edna Faast on Nov. 14, 1942, in Montrose, Colo. He spent his childhood in Gunnison and Durango, Colo. Dwain graduated from Durango High School in 1960.

Dwain furthered his education at Lamar Junior College. While attending, Dwain was active with the Lamar Rodeo Team and had made many friends because of his loving personality.

Shortly after college, Dwain married JoAnn Sawyer on Aug. 31, 1965, in Pocatello, Idaho. The couple moved to Delta, Colo., and divorced after 17 years of marriage.

Dwain loved ranching, cowboying, and, most of all, his girls. He was a true cowboy and rancher all of his life. He also managed the Production Credit Association both in Cortez and Delta, Colo. He transferred to United Bank (now Wells Fargo) where he retired at the age of 50.

Dwain enjoyed hanging out at the Cockroft’s cabin, and telling stories that would make you laugh and brighten your day. He also enjoyed spending time with his hunting buddies.

Dwain was active throughout his community including: Delta County Rodeos, FFA, 4-H, and Cattlemans. He will truly be missed by his loving family and his community that he loved so much. Dwain was of Catholic faith.

Dwain is survived by two daughters, Celeste Caywood (Charlie) of Cortez, Colo., and Heather White (Jerry), Moab; one sister, Joni Warren (Corky) of Whitesboro, Tex.; longtime friend and companion, Joyce Cockroft of Delta, Colo.; and Joyce’s two daughters, Jaime White of Thornton, Colo., and Jenni Sifuentes of Ft. Collins, Colo.

Dwain is further survived by his cherished grandchildren, Jordan and Dallas Caywood of Cortez.

Dwain was preceded in death by his previous wife, Joann Mockoski; his parents, Pete and Edna Stefan; and one brother, Richard.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Dwain’s memory to the Dwain Stefan Scholarship fund, c/o Wells Fargo Bank, 500 Palmer St., Delta, CO 81416.
