Geree Dossey Pierce Putnam died Jan. 23, 2009 at Garfield Memorial extended care in Panguitch, Utah. She was born May 25, 1912 at Stephenville, Erath, Tex., the first of eight children born to Homer Jack Dossey and Ella Stagner Dossey. After she was born her family moved to Oklahoma and her siblings were all born there. They later moved to Dove Creek, Colo.
After finishing school she met Glen C. McGinnis and married him on January 24, 1931 in Wewoka, Hughes, Oklahoma. To this union were born two children, Wilma Ellen McGinnis Anderson and Jimmy Glen McGinnis. Geree and Glen later divorced. She married Raymond Putnam on July 6, 1957 in Goldfield, Nev. They later solemnized their marriage in the Manti Temple on April 25, 1964.
They raised two Indian boys: George Leroy and Douglas Ray. Doug passed away March 15, 1977 in Pima, Ariz. Raymond Putnam passed away May 15, 1983 in Grand Jct., Colo. Geree married Paul Pierce on July 27, 1985 in Tecumseh, Okla. and he passed away April 18, 1999 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Geree has worked most of her life as a cook in the different areas where she has lived. She also worked in dry cleaners in several places, including in Moab for Mel Dalton in the 1950s. She has made many friends in all the places that she has lived and kept up most of those friendships. She was a seamstress and made several quilts and clothes for her family. She canned her garden produce and shared it with those she loved. She loved being a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and said that it was the best thing she ever did in her life. Geree loved her family and wanted to spend as much time as possible with them. The family reunions were always a highlight for her. She loved to dance and went to two and three dances a week at the senior citizens for a time in Oklahoma.
Geree had several of her siblings precede her in death: Bud Dossey, from Cortez, Colo.; Roy Dossey, from Cortez, Colo.; Richard Dossey from Hesperus, Colo.; Lena Sconce from Bethany, Okla.; and Betty Jo Everett from Salinas, Calif. She also had a son, Jimmy Glen McGinnis, from Peoria, Ariz., precede her in death, and an adopted son, Doug Putnam, and several nephews and nieces.
Surviving her is a daughter Wilma McGinnis Anderson of Moab, and her five grandchildren, Janice (Bob) Shupe and Glenna Oliver of Moab; Dee (Kristy) Ferguson of Baker, Nev.; and Danita (Gary) Adkins and Mona (Paul) Partridge of Panguitch, Utah; 34 great-grandchildren and several great-greats and more on the way. She also has two sisters, Dovie Mosley of Canon City, Colo. and Mildred Rhoades of Cortez, Colo.; and several nephews and nieces.
Services were held on Monday, Jan. 26, at the LDS 400 North Chapel in Moab. Interment was at Sunset Memorial Cemetery, also in Moab.
