Robert J. “R.J.” Gritts passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 17, 2009 in Grand Junction, Colo. after a lengthy illness.
Born and raised in Moab, Robert was born to John and Berdene Johnson (Gramlich) Gritts on Feb. 29,1952, in Moab. He attended Grand County Schools, where in high school he excelled in football and basketball. He also attended Utah State University, Logan, Utah for two years.
On Feb. 29,1972, he married Ella Dene Stewart in Moab and they are the parents of three children: Mingo Gritts (KimberLee), Eli Gritts (Tabitha), and Keera Gritts Evans (Iain Evans). They were divorced and on Jan. 24, 1998 he married Konnie Jean Miller in Las Vegas, Nev.
A man of many talents and skills, Robert could fix or repair almost anything. He was a miner, a carpenter, mechanic, and artist. In the past few years he developed an avid interest in rocks. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and was a master at barbecue or grilling, and Dutch oven cooking.
He enjoyed people and had an enjoyable and happy disposition. He enjoyed being a family man, and found great joy in his family and especially his grandchildren.
R.J. was preceded in death by he father and his brothers, Glenn L. Gritts, Lyndel P. Gramlich, and a sister, Sue Gramlich. Survivors include his wife, Konnie, his three children and seven grandchildren, Veda, Ezekiel “Zeke,” Willow, Kyha, Kelsie, and Joshua.
He looked forward to meeting his youngest grandson, Aescli.
He is also survived by his mother, Berdene Gramlich, sisters, Ruth Gramlich Riches (Glen), Pauline Gramlich Marx, Johnnie Faye Gritts Blood; brother, Jeff Gramlich (Shirley); and several nieces and nephews, as well as a step-daughter Missy Miller.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, Nov. 21, at the LDS Stake Center on Locust Lane in Moab, and a short graveside service was held Monday, Nov. 23, with interment at Sunset Memorial Cemetery in Moab.
