Gwendia Mae “Peggy” Higgins entered into God’s presence surrounded by family on May 12, 2010 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction, Colo. She was 80 years old.
Peggy was born in Cullman, Ala. on July 13, 1929, to farmers Emmit and Ethel Nunnelley. At the age of 16, she married Rudy Higgins, the love of her life and husband of 57 years.
Family was very important to Peggy and she took great pride in raising their five children. As the family spread their wings, she loved nothing more than having the kids and grandkids come home for a visit. For her 80th birthday, Peggy and “the girls” took a celebration trip back to her roots in Alabama, enabling them to visit the family homestead and recall special memories with her loved ones there.
As Peggy and Rudy made their home in a variety of places from Alabama to Australia, Peggy’s gift of hospitality always welcomed others into their lives, building relationships that lasted a lifetime.
She was a member of the Community Church of Moab, where she faithfully served as a deaconess and a member of Mary Martha Mission Society. She was a member of the League of Women Voters, and volunteered as a polling judge for many years in Grand County, Utah. Cooking, canning and writing letters also brought Peggy much joy.
Peggy was preceded in death by her husband, Rudy, and two children, Delisa Ann and Ronald Sanford. She is survived by her daughters, Laura Jane (Dale) Wright, Elaine Montez (Terry) Warner, and Susan Kay (Steven) Miller, six grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday, May 15, at The Community Church of Moab, officiated by Pastor Keith VanArsdol. In her memory, contributions may be made to: The Higgins Church Camp Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 88, Moab, UT 84532.
