Bertha Messano, of Delta, Colo., passed away peacefully at the age of 72, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction, on June 15, 2010. Bertha was born on June 1, 1938, to Lou and Margaret Couchman in Paradox Colo.
Bertha was part of a large family, which spread from southeast Utah to southwest Colorado, and she spent her childhood among her many siblings in Paradox, Colo., and Moab. Bertha’s large family and numerous friends, were the most important part of her life. She increased her already large family, raising four children of her own.
Bertha was always a working mother, especially when her husband Albert became disabled. She supported her family by working at several locations, including in food preparation at Del Vista nursing home and then at Skyland Apple processing, until she, herself, became disabled.
Bertha enjoyed spending her time visiting with friends and family, watching western movies, reading and doing word-search puzzles. She also loved to cook for her family and loved collecting things.
Bertha is survived by three sisters: Marylou Patterson of Laytonville, Calif., Frankie Morrison of Casper, Wyo., and Louann Johnson of Moab, Utah. She is also survived by four children and in-laws: Larry Messano, Angelo and Karla Messano, Mary and Michael Whren, and Doni Liddell (widow of Bertha’s late son); and nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren with one more on the way.
Bertha is preceded in death by two husbands: Albert Messano and Floyd Patterson; a son: Floyd Patterson; three sisters: Alice Howlett, Edna Bruckner; and Grace Cleaveland; and two brothers: George Pogue; and Gordon Couchman.
Bertha knew no other way to be, but to selflessly give of herself to everyone she loved. She was a perfect example to us all. She will be sorely missed.
Her suffering has ended. For the comfort and encouragement of we who are left behind, a celebration of her life and memories will be held at Taylor Funeral Home in Delta Colo., on Saturday, June 26, at 3 p.m.
