Bill (William Lawrence) Thompson passed from this world on March 15 after a short illness. Bill was born in California, but considered Moab his home.
Bill was inspirational to many in our community as he publicly freed himself from alcohol and drug addiction only to discover that he had advanced liver cancer. Bill’s deepest desire was to be reunited with his children before his death. He got that wish and more, when his beloved sister, Victoria (Vicki) Datlik, of Apple Valley, Calif., came to visit Bill, along with his children, Tony, a firefighter, and Randi, a college student, of Santa Rosa, Calif., just two weeks before his death.
In addition, Bill is survived by brothers, Jon Thompson and Chris Brooks of Walula, Wash; and Carrie Iverson, of Santa Rosa, Calif. She was the love of his life and the mother of his children. His mother-in-law, Kate Hewitt, also of Santa Rosa, was especially dear to him.
Bill was preceded in death by his mother, Jenice Thompson; and his brother, Jerry Brooks.
A memorial service will be held for Bill on Saturday, March 24 at 1 p.m. at the First Baptist Church on MiVida Drive in Moab. The First Baptist played an integral role in Bill’s recovery and he was enormously grateful to them. A light repast will be served in the Fellowship Hall immediately after the service.
Bill was extremely proud of his sobriety, which he reclaimed through his hard work at the Denver Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center. Donations may be made in his memory to: Salvation Army ARC, 4751 Broadway, Denver, CO 80216.
The family gives their sincere thanks to all of those in Moab who surrounded Bill with love and encouragement.
