Several hundred tons of rock block Long Canyon road approximately 2.5 miles from its intersection with the Potash Road (state Route 279) near Jug Handle Arch on Sunday, Oct. 4. The rock fall took place in a narrow wash and blocked the entire wash and the road. On Monday, Oct. 5, heavy rains caused damage to several other trails. Water caused erosion on the south side of Hardscrabble Hill on the White Rim Trail, cutting a trench parallel to the road, and slightly narrowing that section of the trail, according to the National Park Service. The west side of the White Rim Trail was passable with high clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles and no significant washouts occurred.
