The doors of the Grand Center will open wide to welcome viewers to the Quilting in the Red Rocks Quilt Show March 4-5. The Delicate Stitchers Quilt Guild presents its ninth biennial show and also celebrates its 19th anniversary. The show will be held at the Grand Center, 182 N. 500 West, on Saturday, March 4 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, March 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free of charge.
“Quilt guild members have been busy creating beautiful quilts in anticipation of this very popular event; and visitors to the show won’t be disappointed,” Quilt Guild members said in a news release.
The show will feature a variety of quilting styles, including antique, traditional and art quilts, quilted home décor and wearable art. Themed challenge quilts, from the guild’s last two challenges, will also be on display.
As in the past, the guild will hold a drawing for a quilt – this year a red and white “opportunity quilt” made by guild members. Tickets for the drawing will be sold at the event.
The quilt show also includes a merchants’ mall, featuring vendors from Utah, New Mexico and Colorado, who will offer fabrics, patterns, threads, books, notions and many other quilting-related items. Vendors will also present demonstrations throughout the show. Moab quilter, and guild member, Sandra Starley, is one of fewer than 100 accredited quilt appraisers in the nation, and one of only two in Utah. She will be doing quilt appraisals at her booth, for a fee.
The Delicate Stitchers Quilt Guild was founded in 1998 by a group of dedicated quilters who realized there were a great many quilters in Moab and the surrounding area. They also recognized the need for an organized group that would foster this fiber art form. Monthly meetings are held the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Grand Center, 182 North 500 West, in Moab. There is a lesson given at each meeting and members bring their projects, completed or in progress, for “Show and Tell.” Monthly workshops are scheduled so members can work on their own projects, or participate in a scheduled class.
An annual quilt challenge show is displayed every May and June at the Museum of Moab, 118 E. Center St. This year’s title is “Portals.”
Each year, the guild also holds a retreat at which a mystery quilt pattern is presented. Members also may work on their own projects. The guild participates in many charitable causes and is currently working with a program to make quilts for children and families going through personal crises. Dues for the guild are $15 per year. All quilters, and those interested in quilting, are welcome to join. For more information, contact Marion Eason at 435-259-6447.
