Red Devils wrestling season comes to an end
Whitney, Robertson earn bronze at 3A state tourney

The Grand County High School wrestling team placed 11th out of 16 teams last weekend in the UHSAA 3A state wrestling tournament at Utah Valley University — though Red Devil freshman Carson Whitney and senior Kayden Robertson secured third-place bronze medals in their respective divisions.

Whitney was the breakout performer in the 106-pound division, and according to coaching staff he could be a top-contender for best wrestler in the state as his career at GCHS continues to develop. The tournament was Robertson’s last match as a Red Devil, however, and proved to be an emotional sendoff for the senior athlete.

“This whole season I felt better than I ever have,” Robertson said. “The whole season was so fast-paced. It’s really heartbreaking. Third place in state is great and all that, but I wanted so much more. I wanted to be remembered here at GCHS, and I wanted my name up there with some of the great wrestlers that have made a legacy here.”

Robertson and Whitney were championship-level grapplers for the Red Devils this year — and they managed to win big despite the team’s short roster and other issues that stifled success this season.

“I’ll miss this sport with all of my heart; it was my first true passion and I can’t wait to coach it someday,” Robertson said, adding that he is far from finished with wrestling. He said that he would love to continue wrestling at the next level in college, and he is still in the process of negotiating as to where he might be able to continue his career.
