Meador blasts triple to put Grand over the top
Red Devils split region doubleheader with South Sevier Rams

The Grand County baseball team began the major part of their 3A Region 15 push toward the championships on Thursday, April 5, by splitting a doubleheader with South Sevier.

The second game — which the Red Devils won 8-3 — was notable for the hitting of Bruin Meador as he dinged a 2RBI triple to advance a pair of Grand County runners.

Game 1

Grand County 1,

South Sevier 4

The Red Devils dropped the first game of the doubleheader after allowing the Rams to load the bases twice in the sixth inning. Luckily for Grand County, however, pitcher Masen Ward and his outfield were able to prevent a blowout of runs by South Sevier. A number of those late-game outs came from first baseman Gage Hansen, who went 3-for-4 in stops.

South Sevier’s pitching was outstanding in the opener — so much so that Grand County only logged three hits (from Ward, Hansen and Brody Williams) throughout the game. Grand’s only run came in the second inning from Brayden Schultz, who walked and then scored on an RBI single from Williams.

On defense, Josh Jones led the Red Devils with five putouts on five chances. Schultz, Alec Williams and Brayden Cloud were also perfect in the field with 3-of-3 showings, and Trevin Packard and Nick Downard each recorded an out.

On the mound Ward threw 111 pitches and allowed three runs off 10 hits while walking three. He struck out two Rams batters.

Game 2

Grand County 8,

South Sevier 3

After a brief respite and some grooming to the Red Devils’ diamond, the two teams met again in the second bill of the doubleheader. This time the outcome would favor Grand County as they tallied up eight runs in seven innings to beat the Rams and go up 2-1 in Region 15 play.

South Sevier drew first blood in the game, scoring a run in the first inning to give the Red Devils another scare. But Grand County responded with two runs in the second inning — followed by a six-run streak in the third — to go up 8-1. The Rams would score two more runs at the end of the game, but it wasn’t enough and the Red Devils notched the win.

While he wasn’t the most prolific batter of the game, Meador hit a 2RBI triple in the third to help add to the Red Devils six-run inning. Downard hit a double during his four at-bats, adding a run and hitting three RBIs. Ward and Hansen each added two runs, and Schultz, Jones and Williams added the remaining three runs and recorded a stolen base apiece.

Hansen was the leader on defense for the Red Devils again with six outs on six tries. Cloud went 4-of-4 in the field, and Williams and Downard penciled in two outs each.

The pitching for Grand County was split between Jones as the starter and Schultz on relief duties. In five innings Jones threw 100 pitches, allowing two runs off three hits and giving three walks. In Schultz’s closing he allowed one run off three hits while walking seven.

Next up, North Sanpete

The Red Devils will travel to Mt. Pleasant on April 13 to face the North Sanpete Hawks in a doubleheader. The first game starts at 3 p.m., with the second bill slated for 5 p.m.

The Hawks are 10-5 overall and 3-2 in 3A Region 15 play.

Grand County will return home for a doubleheader against the Manti Templars (2-8, 0-5) on April 20 at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
