My View
July Fourth, 2018

It isn’t easy to make a country, especially a country of free people. It is even harder to keep those freedoms over centuries. Free people do make mistakes, serious mistakes that must be faced.

To build on the good from our past, to correct the challenges we face we must reason together. People who avoid the issues and instead attack individuals who disagree with them are noxious and should be scorned regardless where their opinions lie. No pun intended

No matter who or what we believe, we will only be able to heal our country and rekindle our faith in the principles that make us a strong, united people if all Americans recognize that we owe our freedoms to those who proclaimed just one idea, just one. It was the most revolutionary concept in the history of humankind.

They stated, “We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men, (which today includes women) are created equal and endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.”

The key words are “endowed by their Creator.” The Creator is the Creator of the universe. Regardless of religion, too much or too little of it, we are all children of the same Creator, created to reflect His goodness as we relate to one another. Most of the laws that have been written in the past 250 years could be thrown away if we would follow the Creator’s command to love Him and our neighbor as we love ourselves. History reveals that loving our neighbor can be no easy task. It is against our human nature to do that one simple thing. That explains why the attempts to legally make it happen generally fail.

The past 250 years have revealed that all humanistic, atheistic, progressive governments fail. They fail at the expense of the loss of freedom and the cost of hundreds of millions of human lives. Nothing has done more to perpetuate class warfare and widespread poverty than socialism, communism and materialism.

For a people to be free, each person must know the Creator from which freedoms and responsibility are endowed and practice the precepts provided. Those precepts include faith, hope and love. To be a free people each of us must respect and love one other. OK, let’s be honest. That probably won’t happen. After all, some people are flat-out unlikeable.

What we can do is respect one another. We can listen to one another. We can be honest with one other. This works well on a person-to-person basis. It gets distorted when we allow groupthink, double talk, hate speech, unbridled emotions and the lack of the ability to think and reason to rule the day. It isn’t about social justice. It is about equal justice. It is about the right to give and not to take. Only if we respect ourselves as individuals will we respect others.

The hypocrisy from the radical left has led the nation into a divisive, relativistic class struggle where ultimately the elites will pick off the carcass of our fallen freedoms and rule as tyrants. The hypocrisy from the radical right will result in our becoming a nation where man is god and materialism will rule robbing us of our freedoms and result in the same tyranny. Both are living proof that the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

Today we the people are being manipulated by radicals from both the left and right. Neither of them should succeed but one of them will unless we the people again from the soul of our beings hold “these truths to be self-evident….” It is in God we trust to make out of many, one nation. Under His guidance, His tutelage we will remain a free nation.

Look at the media, listen to the chaotic din of hate and divisiveness and the lying rhetoric that spews from it every day like an open sewer. Open your mind and heart, accept the source of your endowed freedoms and the responsibilities we have to each other that come with those freedoms. If we the people do that we will celebrate many more Independence Days. Have a great Fourth of July and pray that your children and their children will enjoy the same celebration as one free nation during their lifetimes.
