GCHS runners enjoy victories at Loyd’s Lake

Three Grand County varsity boys and girls cross-country runners finished in the top five of their respective races at the Loyd’s Lake Classic held Friday, Aug. 31 in Monticello.

The Red Devil boys placed second to Monticello High School on the Buckaroos’ home course, 40-44, while the varsity girls’ squad finished second to Pagosa Springs, 42-66.

The boys who finished the three-mile race in the top five are Malachi Ricks, 16:54.53, behind first-place finisher Adam Bunker of Monticello, 16:52.09. Red Devils Evan Ellison, 17:22.47 and Arthur Hawks, 17:23.91, finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

On the girls’ side, Kylah Ricks took first, finishing the three-mile race with a time of 19:52.45, well ahead of second-place finisher Sierra Liverett of Pagosa Springs, Colorado, who posted a time of 21:01.72.

Anika Scherer, 21:15.16, and Jessie Anderson, 21:42.66 finished third and fourth, respectively.

Here’s how other Grand County runners fared: On the boys’ side: Jameson Hawks finished 16th with a time of 19:10.03; Soren Indergard came in 23rd with a time of 19:32.90; Jonathan Martineau with a time of 21:06.90 came in 44th.

The scoring ended with harriers Carson Whitney and Stan Johnson, who finished in 47th and 48th place, respectively, with times of 21:11.53 and 21:25.59.

On the girls’ side, Mercedes Zunich finished with a time of 24:53.08, good enough for a 24th-place finish, followed by Rachel Thompson, whose time of 28:24.20 was good enough for a 42nd-place finish.

Grand County runners to compete at the junior varsity level were, for the girls, Alexa Stripeika, who finished her three-mile race with a time of 32:34.80, good enough for a 15th-place finish and Lorena Johnson, whose time of 33:04.20 earned her an 18th-place finish.

On the boys’ side, Cameron Stotz finished with a time of 21:54.06, good enough for fourth place, followed by 13th-place finisher Daniel Thayer, 23:53.91 and Patrick Johnson, who finished in 18th place with a time of 25.06.50.
