Grand County High School’s cross-country team had a great showing at its home meet, which was held at the Moab Golf Club on Sept. 5. The boys team did well, finishing third as a team with two runners in the top ten, but the girls ran an exceptionally good race with three runners finishing in the top five to lead the team to a first place trophy.
Overcast skies threatened rain as thunder boomed in the distance, but luckily the weather held. Resultant cool temperatures and the lack of blazing sun made for more pleasant running conditions than late-summer Moab often provides. Many GCHS runners recorded personal or season best times. Coach Randy Martin noted weeks of practicing on the course made the athletes very familiar with the route and helped lead to such strong performances.
Junior Evan Ellison led the boys team in the three-mile race, taking fourth place and recording a time of 16:44. Junior Malachi Ricks recorded a time of 17:12 for a seventh place finish. Freshman Arthur Hawks grabbed the 11th spot with a time of 17:23, only one second behind the tenth place finisher. Rounding out the scorers for Grand were junior Jameson Hawks and Soren Indergard, finishing in 20th and 32nd place with times of 18:49 and 19:14 respectively. Sophomore Kylah Ricks dominated the girls race, leaving everyone in the dust as she posted a personal best time of 19:32. Sophomre Anika Scherer sprinted across the finish to claim third place and post a time of 20:58. Just behind her, Junior Jessie Anderson came in fourth with a time of 21:09. Freshman Bella Welch and senior Mercedes Zunich were also scorers helping lead the Red Devils to first place in the team scores. Welch ran the course in 23:10 and placed 15th, while Zunich placed 16th with a time of 23:22.
Martin said the race results have him “really excited” for the rest of the season as the young team continues to improve. The “particularly good showing” of the girls team has Martin looking forward to further success.
On Saturday, Sept. 15, the cross-country team will travel to Provo for the BYU Autumn Classic. Normally, the team would only have one home meet a year, but this year Grand will host the region meet on Oct. 9. That race will be run on the same course at the Moab Golf Club.
