Anika Scherer, a sophomore at Grand County High School, helped lead her club soccer team to first place at the Desert Super Cup in Phoenix over Thanksgiving weekend. Scherer scored three times over the course of four games, including the opening goal in the championship match.
Scherer was playing as a guest for Glenwood Springs FC, a team comprised of girls from Colorado, Hawaii and Utah. The team won the tournament in the “Super Elite” division for girls under 17. Scherer has also played club soccer for Fire FC based out of Grand Junction and for the Olympic Development Program team organized by the Colorado Soccer Association.
Scherer’s team won 2-0 in its first game against a team from Albuquerque. On Saturday, the second day of the tournament, Glenwood Springs FC tied 1-1 with Phoenix Rising FC then dominated Phoenix Premier FC 6-1. For the championship showdown, they had a rematch with Albuquerque United FC and came away with a close 2-1 victory.
The Desert Super Cup was the sixth tournament Scherer has competed in over the course of the last year. Playing with three different teams, Scherer has taken first in four of those tournaments.
