More than 60 employees of Moab’s Synergy Company teamed up with the local nonprofit organization Rim to Rim Restoration and the Moab Fire Department March 20 to address fire suppression within the local Moab community.
The Synergy Company employees were compelled to help after the devastating Cinema Courts Fire in June of 2018, while Rim to Rim has played a critical role helping prioritize fire fuels mitigation projects in the Moab area since the June blaze. Volunteers helped to clear dense Russian olive ladder fuels on Grand County School District property, and helped to remove illegally dumped brush from the site.
Vegetation debris was run through a wood chipper to reduce waste and provide useful wood chips. The chips created from this project will be used to help keep weeds down in the recently cleared areas. Additionally, native shrubs and trees were planted to encourage the growth of fire-resilient vegetation.
