The Red Devil soccer team is on top of the world with an unblemished overall record of 6-0, 3-0 in the region.
The Red Devils beat the North Sanpete Hawks in 6-2 on March 19 in Mt. Pleasant. Grand picked up four goals in the first half and two in the second. Nolan Ramirez, Juan Gonzalez and Camron Stotz scored two goals apiece.
The Devils defeated the Emery Spartans 2-1 on March 21 at home. The score does not accurately reflect Grand’s field presence or dominance of the game. Emery was only allowed three significant shots on goal throughout the game.
“We were mostly in the attacking half of the field for both halves,” head coach Chris Beitner said. “The second half I felt we were stringing passes together a little bit better. My job is hard this year because I have so many good players. I want to keep certain people on the field at certain times, but I want everyone to get playing time … it’s a problem in a good way. I have this really deep, talented team this year.”
In the second half, Ramirez put the first goal in for Grand. Arthur Hawks had the second. Grand beat the Carbon Dinos 5-1 on Friday, March 22 at home. Jameson Hawks scored on a penalty kick when he lifted the ball over the head of three defenders and past the goalie. Kane Scherer and senior forward Jose Tavares also scored against Carbon.
He has speed and fancy, but Tavares sees things. Tavares outplays opponents and he outthinks them as well.
Ramirez scored two goals for Grand against the Dinos. Ramirez sustained a shoulder injury late in the second half, but he left the field under his own power and at the end of the game Beitner said, “He looks fine, but I’ll have to find out … he should be ready to go for the next game.”
The team was scheduled to take on San Juan in Moab on Wednesday, March 27 after the newspapers went to press. The team will travel to Richfield on Thursday, March 28. Look for updates in the April 4 edition.
