Be wise, kind … and intelligent

Editor,

Hello. I’m a white, heterosexual, old, politically independent, fairly well educated, middle class, atheist. So what? You can call me Steve.

I will give you all the room to be whomever and whatever you want to be. Just be respectful of others who are different than you. Provide the hows and the whys and the wherefores. In short, communicate. It’s hard to change the way people are, but it’s not that hard to be empathetic or seek common ground.

The world is shrinking rapidly, and there are far too many humans in that decreasing space. If you know me, you know that I have often said that the only way the earth can emerge from its homo sapiens plague is some sort of global catastrophe.

If you are grounded in reality, you know that there are several such catastrophes looming. I’m not too worried, since I will likely be forever tucked away by then, though I wouldn’t mind being around to see it come down. On the other hand, young people and future generations will have to try to survive it. No thanks to us.

What can be done? I have no idea, other than to understand that we are all animals, and part of the great web of life (albeit, alpha big shots in the hierarchy), and that we are ultimately and totally dependent on our mother earth.

Be wise and kind and generous, and geez, how about intelligent? And always do unto others …
