How did the Grand County softball team celebrate Senior Recognition Day on Monday, April 8? Skydivers landed on the field, the team wore new uniforms, and the Lady Devils beat the North Sanpete Hawks 16-6 in the first game of a doubleheader.
The Hawks were impressive and intimidating right from the start. They picked up three runs in the top of the first and they knocked Grand down in the bottom of the inning as easy as 1 … 2 … 3 … you’re out. Things changed after that and Grand earned that 16-6 score – the nice new uniforms were good and dirty by the end of the game.
“North Sanpete is good at what they do,” said GCHS Athletic Director Ron Dolphin. “They’re good hitters.” The Hawks had no less than six base hits to the short left field area.
The Red Devils recovered from the shock and awe of the first inning and got on track. Corteney Noyes had a leadoff walk. Jessica Jones bunted and runners were on first and second with no outs. Chloe Book rocked a single and she picked up an RBI. The score was 3-2 in favor of North Sanpete in the top of the third.
The Lady Devils took the lead in the bottom of the third. Lainey Bohannon had a single. Paige Shumway a double. Noyes a single. Hannah Owen popped a sacrifice fly and picked up an RBI. Jaci Shumway hit a homerun and Grand was up 6-3 in the bottom of the third.
The Hawks tied it 6-6 with extra base hits and a homerun in the top of the fourth.
The first game of the doubleheader featured some slick defensive plays on both sides. North Sanpete had a runner on first and they tried to bunt. Pitcher Jaci Shumway caught it in midair and threw out the runner on first; the crowd loved the double play.
In the fifth inning the Hawks were threatening again. Noyes pulled in a long bomb to centerfield and prevented a homerun. Noyes was pushed to the fence and bounced off a plywood billboard and the sound could be heard from behind home plate.
The Red Devils took back the lead in the bottom of the fourth and never looked back. Bohannon doubled and Lexi Carroll homered, which put Grand up 8-6. The Lady Devils had a monster rally in the bottom of the fifth when they sent 11 batters to the plate and scored seven runs.
Paige Shumway doubled, Owen doubled, and Jessica Jones bopped a homerun, which made the score 15-6 in favor of Grand. The team picked up another run in the bottom of the sixth and the game was called.
The Hawks got revenge in the second game in a tightly fought contest, 6-7. It was a squeaker. Grand almost came back; the Devils picked up four runs in the seventh, but it was not enough. Owen and Paige Shumway had a homerun in the second game. Noyes belted out a double and a triple. Jones had a double and Hannah Tangren earned herself a triple.
The Lady Red Devils won a doubleheader 15-5 and 11-9 against the South Sevier Rams on Friday, April 12, in South Sevier. The softball team is off for spring break and is scheduled to play the San Juan Broncos on Tuesday, April 23, at home.
