Team riding 5-game win streak into playoffs
The Grand County boys soccer team didn’t miss a beat after a long spring break, shutting out their final two regular season opponents before heading into the postseason undefeated in region.
The Red Devils beat the Emery Spartans 2-0, on Tuesday, April 23, in Emery. Juan Gonzalez and Nolan Ramirez put in a goal apiece in the second half.
The Red Devils shut out the Manti Templars 2-0, on Thursday, April 25, at home. Cameron Hoppensteadt was the Grand goalie of record and he earned the shutout. Kane Scherer found the back of the net and Miguel Dominguez also scored in the first half.
Seniors Ramirez, Gonzalez, Scherer, Hoppensteadt, Bailey Shelton, Stacy Randall, Jose Tavares, and Jaxen Saunders were honored on Thursday, April 25, for their years of service to the Red Devils soccer team.
Ramirez, Scherer, Gonzalez, and Dominguez were Grand’s top scorers in the regular season. Hoppensteadt had three shutouts as goaltender and Oliver Perez had one.
In an interview a few weeks ago, some seniors expressed how much the team has grown and how the quality of Red Devils’ play has improved over the past few years. The seniors on the soccer team are a big part of the reason Grand is on top right now. There are several who rank among the best soccer players in the state.
The seniors will leave the team in good hands. Sophomore Miguel Dominguez was one of Grand’s top scorers this year. Freshman Arthur Hawks played so hard, hustled nonstop, and had so much heart, it was if he was applying for a job – as a soccer player. Sophomore Eli Taylor is ranked in the top 10 in the region for assists.
The first round of playoffs began Wednesday, May 1, after The Times-Independent’s B section went to press. The team is currently ranked 12-1-1 overall and 9-0-1 in the region. The Red Devils enjoyed a five game win streak going into the playoffs.
