Canyonlands Field near Moab is one of three Utah airports awarded $18.7 million in grant funding provided by the U.S. Department of Transportation, according to a statement from DOT.
Canyonlands Field received a $4.75 million cut of the $18.7 million, funding that will be used to repair the broken taxiway, said Airport Director Judd Hill.
Hill said the airport normally receives FAA discretionary funding grants – which were used to repair the runway and fund smaller projects. The supplemental funding that came through earlier this week involved a much more detailed effort, said Hill.
He hopes to obtain a grant to expand the apron and ramp, a subject that will be discussed May 21 when the Community Impact Board meets with the Grand County Council. Hill hopes to get a total of $3.8 million for the ramp and apron when FAA discretionary grants are approved in the fall, with potentially $175,000 of that funding coming from a CIB loan.
A $425,000 match would be required for the total grants allocation of about $8.5 million for both projects. A loan would be almost guaranteed if the grant request were rejected. Hill said either the grant match or the loan could be paid back using airport parking fees.
About $5,000 has been collected in the $3 per day fee since the fee was enacted two months ago, said Hill.
“We’re really excited,” said Hill. “We’re happy to get it because a lot of work went into it. It’s good to see them see our needs.”
Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao said a total of $779 million in supplemental FAA grants were approved and will be spread out over 127 airports in all 50 states.
Bryce Canyon and Roosevelt airports also received funding, which is the second and final increment of supplemental funding through the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2018. “This supplemental funding allows us to invest in important infrastructure needs at the nation’s airports, especially those serving rural communities,” said Chao.
