Tennis team struggles at state tournament

The Grand County High tennis team’s season ended on a disappointing note May 9-11 at the State 3A Championships at Liberty State Park in Salt Lake City.

Athletic Director Ron Dolphin through social media reported on the first day of the tournament that singles competitors lost all of their first-round matches following a windy start to the tournament.

Braxten Pierce and Kasey Kemp won their first doubles match 6-0, 6-2. Pierce and Kemp lost the quarterfinals match 0-6, 1-6 to what Dolphin described as a “talented private school from Waterford.”

Still, they had done something no one else had done this season: beat Waterford in one match. Dolphin messaged that Pierce and Kemp deserved “kudos” for their efforts. The tournament marked the end of high school careers for seniors Pierce, Kemp, Kai Wainer and Cody Johnston.
