The Grand County Sheriff’s Office reported that around 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 14, a local man, Spencer W. Connolley, suffered fatal injuries in the landing zone for skydivers at Canyonlands Airport after a “fast and hard landing.” Connolley was 23.

The Grand County Sheriff’s Office investigated the incident and said that foul play was not involved. “No criminal charges are being investigated,” said a statement from the office.

Sheriff’s Lt. Kim Neal said that he did not suspect that weather played a part in the accident, as only slight winds were present at the time.

According to Neal, Connolley jumped with several other people, and his equipment and parachute were “working properly.”

“Just before landing he was in a ‘swoop’ and did not appear to have time to ‘flare’ to slow his landing,” Neal said. “Spencer died on impact.”

Connolley was a contracted employee with Sky Dive Moab. According to Neal, he was not working at the time of the accident.
