Grand County cross-country teams gained solid ground against regional and cross-state competitors on Friday, Aug. 30 at the 2019 Monticello Lloyds Lake Classic. Male and female runners in sixth through twelfth grade from over 10 Utah and Colorado schools participated in the meet.
The Grand County High varsity team won second place overall in the boys 5,000-meters.
Senior Evan Ellison earned gold with a 15:29.5 finish. Senior Malachi Ricks took the silver medal in 15:35.8. Arthur Hawks placed ninth in 17:16.5.
The Lady Red Devils varsity team took second overall in the girls 5,000-meters.
Grand’s golden girl Kylah Ricks took first in a dominating 17:15.5. Ricks beat the second-place finisher by more than 90 seconds, sprinting past the third place finisher in over two minutes and 30 seconds. Jessica Anderson secured the seventh spot with a time of 21:44.3; Lorena Johnson landed in the 21st spot at 25:46.3.
The fifth spot in the boys junior varsity 5,000-meter race went to Daniel Thayer with 20:58.1; Tyler Stash took ninth at 21:30.6. Thayer and Stash competed against 30 other runners.
The Grand County Middle School Thunderbirds landed in the fifth spot overall, for the boys in the 6th-8th grade 3,000-meters race. Connor Swasey finished 24th out of over 70 runners in the boys 3000-meters race with a time of 11:27.4. Kalan Bowden was right on his heels in the 25th spot with 11:27.8. Lane Peterson took the 33rd position in 12:18.8.
The Red Devils varsity cross-country team is scheduled to attend the Wasatch Invite at Heber City Soldier Hollow on Saturday, Sept. 7.
