The Grand County varsity volleyball team downed the Carbon Dinos 3-0 in straight sets on Sept. 24 in Moab.
Early in the first set, the Red Devils and Dinos were locked in a dual. The score was tied at five when the Devils broke away. Grand enjoyed a 12-point lead at one point in the set. Carbon did have a burst of energy mid-set and, as they had all night, the Dinos tried very convincingly to stage a comeback. The Red Devils took the first set 25-16.
The second set was a repeat of the first. Carbon had a slim lead and matched Grand point for point. Grand built and maintained a four-point cushion and took the second set 25-20.
Carbon was feeling the heat in the third set. The Red Devils scored first and built a four- to five -point cushion. Carbon staged another comeback, chipped away at Grand’s lead and tied the Red Devils at 14. The battle went back and forth. One team would take the lead, the other would tie and take it back.
Carbon put up more than a valiant fight, but Grand took the final set 25-23.
The Devils went on the road on Thursday, Sept. 26 and faced the Emery Spartans in Castle Dale. Grand beat Emery 3-1. Emery picked up the first set 26-24. The Devils won the last three sets 25-23, 25-18, 25-14.
The team was back in action at home on Tuesday, Oct. 1. The Times-Independent will provide updated scores and team statistics when they become available.
