The Native American population of Moab invited the community to celebrate Indigenous People’s Day on Monday, Oct. 14 in front of Moab City Hall.
The indigenous celebration was sponsored by Full Circle Intertribal Center, a new nonprofit organization in Moab, and the Grand County High School Native American Club. Navajo tacos were served to guests.
Renowned hoop dancer Joseph Secody and singer and drummer Jonathan Jared Canty displayed their cultural talents. Candy explained to the crowd that Secody’s clothing and mask was handmade and had a strong personal, spiritual significance.
The GCHS Native American Club created and displayed various posters that explained historic milestones – both good and bad – for the nation’s tribes.
Moab Mayor Emily Niehaus by proclamation declared Oct. 14 Indigenous People’s Day.
