Downed power line sparks fire; outage impacts 1,094

A downed power line caused multiple fires near Zimmerman Lane in Spanish Valley Tuesday night, Oct. 29, according to Moab Valley Fire Chief TJ Brewer. Three vehicles were lost to the fire, but Brewer reported no injuries.

The fires were coincident with a power outage affecting some Rocky Mountain Power customers in Spanish Valley. Brewer said Rocky Mountain Power was investigating the cause of the downed power line; separately, a Rocky Mountain Power representative said the cause of the power outage was under investigation.

Brewer said that the fire department was nearing the end of putting some of the fires out when they noticed another down the road that had engulfed two mobile homes and another vehicle. Brewer said the crew evacuated the home next door and that the vehicles were the only property lost in the fire.

Power outage affects hundreds of customers

Workers with Rocky Mountain Power on Wednesday continued to investigate a power outage on a bitterly cold Tuesday night in Spanish Valley that affected 1,094 customers.

A spokesperson said the problem was related to damaged breakers, which were repaired about two hours after the power went out at 11:17 p.m. It was back on at 1:24 a.m.

This is the third outage to affect the area in as many months. An outage in August continues to go unexplained while a lightning strike knocked out power in September.
