After Montrose police shared a tip with Grand County Dispatch about a stolen car that was later abandoned on Interstate 70, an officer with Utah Highway Patrol arrested a suspect at the Thompson Springs rest area who he allegedly found with the stolen vehicle.
The suspect, Kathleen Rose Chavez, age 46, told officers after her arrest that she and others, who she did not identify, had seen the car at a gas station in Montrose, “went for a cruise in it, and ended up in Utah,” according to court documents. She told police she was, however, unsure how she ended up in Utah.
The patrolman said he found the vehicle, a 2015 GMC Sierra pickup, around midnight on Friday, Dec. 13, at the Thompson Springs rest area after Montrose police alerted other agencies of the theft. As the patrolman searched the vehicle, he said Chavez approached him from the restroom to ask what was going on, at which point he questioned her and later arrested her on one felony charge of stealing a vehicle.
