Red Devil boys basketball goes 2-1 at 3-day tournament

The Grand County boys basketball team earned two wins and one loss at the Steve Hodson Cancer Classic Tournament, Thursday, Dec. 26 through Saturday, Dec. 28, at Cedar City and Canyon View high schools.

Steve Hodson was a basketball coach and between 1994 and 2006, he won two state championships with Cedar City High and two with Canyon View. The charity tournament that bears his name raises money for Utahns battling cancer.

On the first day of the tournament, Grand County beat the APA West Valley Eagles 79-53 at Cedar City High School. The Red Devils outscored the Eagles 16-15 in the first quarter and 17-11 in the second. Grand County was up 33-26 at halftime and cemented the victory with a 26-14 third quarter and 20-13 in the fourth.

Ryelan Jones, Rafe Saunders, Milo Birdwell, Luke Williams and Eli Hazlett all landed three-pointers for a total of 27 points; Williams had four to his credit and Hazlett had two.

Williams was the top Red Devil with 22 points; Hazlett had 16. Kaine Allred was rebound king with 10; Birdwell racked up seven rebounds. Jones, Allred, Williams and Birdwell each had three assists.

On the second day, Grand County conquered the Utah Military Academy-Camp Williams Marauders 69-58, at Canyon View High School. The Red Devils outpaced the Marauders 24-17 in the first quarter, 14-13 in the second, and 12-9 in the third. Both teams scored 19 points in the fourth.

Grand County had 12 three-pointers; over half of the Red Devils’ point tally came via the three; Williams picked up five, Allred and Birdwell each hit two buckets from downtown. Sage Stroder netted one three-pointer for Grand County.

Allred took the Marauders for 23 points and Hazlett scored 19.

The team fell flat on the last day of the tournament when Grand County lost to the Parowan Rams 38-61 at Canyon View High School. The Red Devils kept it close in the second half, but the Rams won all four quarters. Jones had a team-leading 10 points, Williams had six, Tyler Lindsay, Saunders, Allred and Hazlett each earned five points. Birdwell had one bucket.

The Red Devils are back in Moab to take on the Grand Junction Coyotes on Wednesday, Jan 8.
