Deputy nabs alleged Las Vegas car thief

A Grand County Sheriff’s deputy arrested a suspected car thief out of Las Vegas during a traffic stop in Interstate 70 Jan. 16.

Almunique Wright, 26, was driving a red SUV toward Colorado at milepost 199 when the deputy’s radar gun clocked her traveling at 87 mph in an 80 mph zone.

The deputy in his affidavit of probable cause said a computer check revealed the car was reported stolen. Wright first said her brother rented the vehicle, but that she had no paperwork, and then said a man whose last name she couldn’t recall gave her the vehicle on the Las Vegas Strip once she was told the SUV was reported stolen.

The woman did not have an identification and allegedly lied about her year of birth. The deputy was able to determine her actual identity through pawn shop slips he reportedly found in the SUV.

Wright was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle giving false personal identity to peace officer, driving on a suspended or revoked driver’s license, and she was cited with two traffic infractions, including speeding.
