The Grand County High School wrestling team competed in the 3A Divisional Tournament on Friday, Jan. 29 and Saturday, Feb. 1, at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield.
Those in weight classes at extreme ends of the scale had an interesting tournament. Landon Moralez took fifth place at 106 pounds and at 285 Jaymmin Hester landed in seventh.
Moralez earned 13 team points and earned a bye in championship round one before falling in the quarterfinal to a wrestler from Juab.
Moralez’s tournament really started in consolation round two when he wrestled and defeated his teammate, Oscar Martinez, who picked up the 10th spot in the 106-pound class. Moralez took consolation round three, via fall over a wrestler from Union. He lost the semifinals match to grappling powerhouse Delta and won his last match over South Sevier by injury default.
Hester picked up eight team points. He won the second round consolation match over Manti and he scored a victory by injury in his last match over Union.
Blane Thompson locked up eighth place in 170-pound section. He scored four team points and earned a win over a wrestler from Manti. Jeremiah Perman landed in sixth place in the 182-pound division and contributed three team points.
Up next for the Red Devils is the USHAA Championship Tournament at the Utah Valley University, in Orem on Friday, Feb. 14 and Saturday Feb. 15.
