Israel Camey, the 10-year-old boy involved in Sunday’s car crash, has died. He had sustained life-threatening injuries in the accident, which also killed his father, Vilsar.

“We are so deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Israel and Vilsar Camey,” said the Grand County School District, where Israel was a student, in a Facebook post Wednesday morning. “Our thoughts and condolences go out to the family, students, friends and others affected by this tragedy.”

A pregnant woman, Katherine Sawyer, was injured in the crash. She gave birth later that night, one month before her due date, at Moab Regional Hospital. The baby was flown to Grand Junction with trauma-related injuries, and Sawyer was released from the hospital to return to her baby girl, Abigail, on Tuesday.

The suspect in the case, 42-year-old Benjamin Thomas Balls, was initially charged with two felonies — one for manslaughter, the other for failing to respond to a peace officer’s signal to stop, resulting in death — and seven other misdemeanors and infractions. Moab Police Chief Bret Edge said that the charges would be changed to reflect that the crash also, ultimately, killed Israel.
