In trying to understand our President’s claim that he was only trying to get to the bottom of corruption in the Ukraine I found a couple of interesting facts.
In regards to the proposed general fund tax increase proposed by the council, I have the following two concerns:
I recently read that studies of traffic speeds on streets with 20 mph limits indicate people are traveling between 20 mph and 29 mph.
The Grand County Council wants over $1.5 million in new and additional spending.
I want to thank the San Juan County Commissioners for investing in a thorough and thoughtful process to develop and adopt new land ordinances for Spanish Valley.
History is a complicated patchwork of activity, perception, and reality. These things get complicated and, as time goes by, memories fade and recollections get fuzzy. But history matters because our very moments now are continuations of our living history, and are the basis for thought and action based on what has gone before. History is rich with lessons for our enrichment and enlightenment.
My somewhat tongue-in cheek complaint to the T-I two weeks ago made this point exactly. The words, actions and ideas of people who now only pretend to be Republicans are irrelevant. Mike Lee, John Curtis, and everyone else in the tank for Trump look like 4-year-olds with their fingers in their ears shouting nah-nah nah-nah nah-nah-nah. Nothing they say or do should be taken seriously.
Moab is truly blessed in having an independent, conscientious, community bookstore of the highest caliber and quality. Our congratulations, kudos and thanks go out to Andy and Marcie Nettell, and the always dedicated Back of Beyond Books staff, for surviving and thriving for 30 years now, and always giving back so much to the community (Books for Tots, author readings, community events, etc.), despite the onslaught of digital media and Amazon.
Veterans are a unique breed of Americans, an exclusive family. There are 5 million fewer veterans today than the 26 million veterans of 9/11, approximately 6% percent of the U.S. population. About 600 veterans are living in Grand County proper. Veterans are more accepted now than their vilification during the Vietnam War; 150,000 Vietnam vets currently die each year.
We all know there are many good reasons to not use illegal drugs coming from south of our border. We also know the drug cartels engage in vicious, bloody turf battles over who gets the largest share of the drug trade. People die every day in these battles. But when nine American citizens are murdered, even if it is a case of mistaken identity, the consequences of our drug use really hit home.
The Department of Energy at the Moab Tailings Site is looking for anyone who can tell them or provide documents saying how far below the original existing ground level was excavated before starting to put tailings in place. This would have been about 1955-56. If you have knowledge on this matter please contact the Grand County UMTRA Liaison Russ Von Koch at 435-259-1795.
Last week a letter appeared in your newspaper entitled “T-I shouldn’t cover GOPers.” The title was followed with a tirade attacking Republicans as hypocrites and cowards. It included comments that belittle Republicans, refers to the president as a traitor and various other irrational demeaning comments. In short Trump Derangement Syndrome is alive in the backyard.
