The Grand County High tennis team’s season ended on a disappointing note May 9-11 at the State 3A Championships at Liberty State Park in Salt Lake City.
The Grand County boys tennis team hosted the Region 15 Championship on Thursday, May 2 and Friday, May 3, in Moab. The team finished fourth in the tournament that included Richfield, Manti, South Sevier, North Sanpete and San Juan. Manti won the tournament. Every Red Devil who played in the championship qualified for state.
The Grand County boys tennis team had a busy up and down week on the court. The Red Devils traveled to Richfield on Tuesday morning, March 26 and lost every singles and doubles match to the Wildcats.
The Grand County boys tennis team finished in the middle of a crowded St. George Invite on Friday, Mar. 15 and Saturday Mar. 16, the team’s first tournament of the 2019 campaign.
The Red Devil tennis team has five players coming back in 2019 and coach Skylar Johnson said excitement is in the air.
Moab’s Kent Somerville has once again been named Utah’s top tennis player in his age bracket, according to Matt Bailey. Bailey said Somerville and his family attended a Utah Tennis Federation banquet on Jan. 31, where he won the award for 2018 – a feat he also earned in 2017.
